Parallel vs Bifilar Winding Strategies

Understanding different winding techniques for optimal motor performance.

When substituting one thick wire for several thinner wires, winders must choose between winding strategies, most notably parallel and bifilar winding.

Bifilar winding specifically refers to winding two (or more) identical wires side-by-side simultaneously. This ensures that the parallel wires have the exact same length, resistance, and inductance, which prevents internal circulating currents.

Using multiple thinner wires in parallel is highly advantageous because it dramatically improves the flexibility of the bundle. Thinner wires easily snake into the stator slots, improving the overall fill factor and heat dissipation.
