How to Calculate Wire Current Capacity
Learn how to determine the safe amperage limits for different wire gauges.
Every wire gauge has a maximum safe current capacity, often measured in Amperes per square millimeter (A/mm²). Exceeding this limit causes excessive Joule heating, breaking down the enamel insulation.
In standard open-air conditions, copper wire can handle roughly 3 to 4 Amps per square millimeter. However, heavily packed motor stators restrict airflow, meaning conservative limits are necessary.
To calculate the absolute capacity, multiply the cross-sectional area by your targeted current density. This mathematical check ensures your new winding will survive the nameplate full-load amps (FLA) of the motor.
